"Your Website Was Robbed.. and You Didn't Even Notice"
I looked at my web logs (never as often as I should), and saw heavy use of one graphics file.
How could a file load more often than the rest of the page?
I checked further, and found out someone was grabbing the product photo I shot, and using it to sell their own stuff on another site.
Worst part was.. they got a lot more traffic than me. That really hurt!
The cost of the bandwidth was small.. but I felt violated. So I changed the photo on my site, and saved a copy of my logo as the name of the stolen photo.
When I went to the thief's page.. there was MY LOGO.
Naturally, they changed their photo quickly, and were too smart to try taking mine again.
I resolved to do something about it. I've tried watermarks, logos on the photos, and even though about hiring a lawyer. All of those were too time consuming or expensive.
Finally, I found the perfect solution. Hot Link Alarm
It's so simple and easy.. just download the program and follow the step by step instructions and you'll be protected.
The software comes from a team headed by my friend Willie Crawford. Willie and his team are geniuses at helping people setup web sites and make money online.
Protect your web site. Pick up Hot Link Alarm today.. then post a comment and let me know if this message helped, and what other issues you'd like to see hear on LaserPage.

WSJ.com - When Nike Met iPod
WSJ.com - When Nike Met iPod
: "Wireless technology has delivered another way to marry music to exercise: a sneaker that talks to your iPod.Apple Computer Inc. and Nike Inc. yesterday said they have teamed up to create a wireless system that connects Apple's iPod nano digital music player to certain Nike sneakers. Using a small sensor that's inserted into the sole of a new Nike running shoe -- the $100 Air Zoom Moire -- the system lets runners record the distance, time, pace and calories burned during each workout. Nike is also rolling out workout clothes that are made to carry iPods, and other compatible shoes will be launched later in the summer.
Apple and Nike are offering a $29 kit that connects the iPod nano to the new Air Zoom Moire.
The Apple/Nike partnership is the latest attempt by sporting-goods makers to cram electronics gadgetry into sport shoes and apparel. Germany's Adidas AG this October will release a heart-monitoring transmitter from Polar Electro that can be clipped onto Adidas footwear and apparel like sports bras. The transmitter sends data to a wristwatch that records the heart rate and measures a runner's speed and distance. Adidas also produces the Adidas 1, a running shoe with a computer chip that customizes the cushioning for each stride a runner takes. Adidas's technology has been rolled out to another recently released running shoe and a basketball shoe due out next month."

Kowon (not to be mistaken for Cowon) presented these rather cool TV-glasses at the COMM Korea 2006 fair. They can be connected to your TV and provide a superior quality of viweing broadcasts. The manufacturer claims that the experience is similar to watching a 32' LCD Tv at a distance of 2 metres. The image is displayed on a 4.8mm by 4.2mm micro LCD screen, and personally, I would really like to test these... wait & see...

Survey of Remote Worker Habits
SonicWALL Survey Shows Greater Freedom Among Out-of-Office Worker Community Keeps Dishes and Workload Up-to-Date, Bad Temper at Bay
SUNNYVALE, Calif., March 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- SonicWALL Inc. (NASDAQ: SNWL), a leading provider of integrated network security and productivity solutions, today announced the results of a survey of 941 remote and mobile workers worldwide. The survey, conducted by Insight Express and SonicWALL at the end of 2005, indicates that the growing trend towards home working is likely to breed a more productive and liberated international workforce.
76% of employees surveyed believe that working remotely is an aid to productivity and 61% are also convinced that their managers agree with them. Security came low on the list of priorities, however, with 88% of the individuals surveyed admitting to storing passwords in easily-discovered locations, and only 12% employing encrypted files to store and manage their login data. 56% said they rely on their memories to keep track of their network passwords, while others used the same passwords for all devices, stored the information on cell phones, or stuck notes with the login information onto their computer (4%).
Yin and Yang of clothes, chores and cleanliness
All respondents were relaxed about their personal habits when working remotely. While about 39% of respondents of both sexes said they wear sweats while working from home, 12% of males and 7% of females wear nothing at all. In matters of cleanliness, the difference between the sexes was more pointed: 44% of women surveyed said they showered on work-at-home days, as opposed to men, who were slightly more likely to shave (33%) than wash (30%). 18% of men regularly break off to do household tasks such as laundry, dishwashing or dusting whereas many more women -- over 38% -- found their attention claimed by chores.
Respondents also said they took the opportunity to eat and drink outside standard times (about 35%); listen to music (45%) or watch TV (28%); and 21% of all respondents admitted to sneaking in an afternoon nap. A small percentage of those surveyed (9%) admitted to feelings of guilt about being away from the office. Taking a longer lunch than at the workplace was also relatively rare (12%).
This easy-going approach keeps tempers on an even keel, according to the survey. More than 80% of surveyed workers have never lost their temper with support staff trying to help then fix a problem. Only 40% of polled respondents said they experienced problems when accessing their corporate networks remotely, although fewer than 50% accessed any applications other than Web mail when working outside the office.
More than half of the survey's respondents accessed the corporate network from home on a daily basis, with 86% logging in remotely several times a week. Respondents said that the chief attraction of working remotely was the ability to maintain a flexible schedule. Only 22% of workers used cell phones or PDAs to work from home, but respondents said they expected this type of usage to grow in the coming year.
"We are experiencing a sharp rise in demand for simple, secure remote access to networks of all sizes," said Steve Franzese, vice president of marketing at SonicWALL. "The growing popularity of remote and mobile working means that the perimeter of the network has become indistinct, and is therefore more difficult to protect. With our new SSL VPN appliance range, SonicWALL offers organizations of all sizes a very simple, powerful way of keeping remote workers connected and protected."
In 2005, SonicWALL launched the industry's first range of SSL-VPN solutions for remote network access supporting unlimited numbers of concurrent tunnels at no additional cost. The powerful family of appliances makes remote clientless access simple and affordable. These solutions will interoperate seamlessly behind third party firewalls and deliver enhanced Unified Threat Management protection to remote users who access a SonicWALL-protected network. In November, 2005 SonicWALL acquired the technology assets of startup enKoo in order to enrich the feature set of its SSL-VPN offering. In January, 2006 the company introduced the SSL-VPN 200 appliance for networks of under 50 users.
650 responses to the survey came from the United States, with the remainder from Australia, Canada, Asia Pacific, Japan and Europe. The majority of respondents were in the 25 to 45 age range.

I'm one of Balter's 117,000 agents.. a very corporate approach to the type of marketing I teach. Hard to be "grass roots" when you get too organized
By Scott Kirsner | November 14, 2005
Critics can be so cruel. So Dave Balter, founder of the Boston-based marketing firm BzzAgent, thought it would be nice to have some nonpoisoned pens writing on his behalf when his book was published earlier this month. ''Grapevine: The New Art of Word-of-Mouth Marketing' is Balter's first book, and he wanted to give it every possible advantage. The review from Publishers Weekly, posted prominently on Amazon.com, was a cast-iron pan. Grapevine's ''slapdash, 'admittedly nonscientific' analysis is backed by little more than enthusiasm, quotes from The Tipping Point and three years of BzzAgent anecdotes,' PW wrote. ''Balter's gee-whiz, narcissistic writing voice won't help win converts, either.'
But ''Grapevine' received a much warmer welcome from the amateur Amazon.com reviewers, who bestowed on the book an enthusiastic four stars (out of a possible five). It helps that many of the most glowing were written by foot soldiers in Balter's army of 117,000 BzzAgents -- volunteer product promoters who get free samples of new products. Two thousand of his buzz agents got an advance copy of Balter's tome."

Printing on Consumer Goods - a flasy way to say "Buy Me"
Siemens has announced a new colour display screen so thin and flexible it can be printed on to paper or foil, and so cheap it can be used on throw-away packaging.

That's the vision of Toshiba Corp. and a number of other Japanese electronics companies, which are readying gadgets that will swap their batteries for a long-anticipated alternative energy source: fuel cells. HP recall on laptop batteries for compaq and hewlett packard notebook computers
From AP:
HP Recalls Laptop Batteries
October 14, 2005 9:33 a.m.
Hewlett Packard Co. is recalling about 135,000 battery packs for some H-P and Compaq laptop computers because of reports they overheated and melted, the Palo Alto, Calif., company announced Friday. The lithium ion rechargeable battery packs are used with H-P Pavilion, Compaq Presario, H-P Compaq and Compaq Evo laptop computers. The company has received 16 reports of the batteries" overheating; four cases occurred in the U.S. The company said customers should stop using the laptops and contact H-P for a replacement by calling 888-404-7398 or visiting www.hp.com/support.

Let's Not Fall Behind
As a Vonage customer, I know they've tried to get this important emergency service in place. You can log in to their site without getting hit repeatedly with the message that you need to let them know where your phone is so the 911 service will work right. It's free, and takes just a few seconds.
However, we ought to have the right to NOT have this service. We don't need a nanny watching over us on this.. and with full disclosure, opting out shouldn't make a liablity for Vonage (supposedly people would want to sue them if they call 911 and the call doesn't go through.. but I've never heard of such a suit when regular phones don't work).
The latest news I've heard says that the FCC gave a repreave... additional time to comply.. maybe it's time to tell them to leave us alone.
I found one site, sponsored by telecom companies, that does a good job of presenting the case for free trade. The media page has some great commercials to watch, and if you agree, there's information on getting involved. A bit dated in many places, but worth a few minutes to learn about the issues.

From WSJ.com - Dueling Hackers Hit Firms' Computers
A first round of attacks that began Sunday had appeared to abate by Monday. Yesterday, an apparently separate group launched a more aggressive attack, scanning the entire Internet to search for unpatched systems. The new worm was spreading at a rate of one new machine a second, or 30 times faster than the earlier round, according to David Maynor, a security researcher at Internet Security Systems Inc. in Atlanta.
Once a machine became infected, it received additional instructions from a central server via an Internet-messaging system before attempting to infect additional machines on its corporate network, he said. Hackers have been organizing such infected machines into 'bot' networks that can be used to launch extortion schemes, spam or 'phishing' attacks, which seek to trick users into providing personal information."

Get Serious About Color
Some users tell us that's just fine with them. Their printer is a toy for making greeting cards and family photos. The cost per page may be 10 times that of a laser printer, but they only print a few sheets here and there. Just like toasters, they all get hot.. if not, you toss it out and buy a new one.
Is that you?
If you are looking at using color in business or printing a lot, it's time to take another look at the color laser printers out today.
The current crop of color laser printers falls in two categories.. either the manufacturer is going for a "toy" and cutting corners, or they opt for engineering better speed, dependability and paper handling.
If you have an office, share a printer on a network, or print more than 100 sheets a month, a BUSINESS color laser printer may end up costing less in the long run, and providing more options. Many users tell us they produce better reports, more marketing materials and winning proposals in addition to whatever they thought they were going to print.
The real breakthrough in color laser printers was the HP Color LaserJet 4600. It was the first dependable business machine to print color fast, and at a low enough cost per page that you don't have to run to the office supply store in the middle of an important job.
Recently, HP released a batch of refurbished color LaserJet 4600 printers. Each look completely new, with a full HP warranty. They come in a sealed box.... just like a new printer.
The difference is the price. You will save HUNDREDS of dollars!
The HP Color LaserJet 4600 is just one of many in the business line.. most are occasionally available as factory, and we keep a waiting list so you can let us know what you need, and we'll find it.
If you're thinking of upgrading to office color this year.. give us a call at Landmark 909-875-5687.. We will talk to you about your plans and make a recommendation. It's good to plan ahead, why not use a printer expert to help you sort it out?
There are a limited number of HP Color LaserJet 4600 printers available. Call if you have an interest in this or any other printer and wish to have the best prints at the lower cost per page.

FAQ: Printer prints blank pages
No image on the drum
No toner on the image
No charge to pull the image onto the paper.
The first one can come from the computer... if you don't send an image, you won't get one. It also can happen if the laser scanner is bad.
#2 would come from being out of toner... or the most common blank page... you didn't pull the strip from the toner cartridge.
The third would be a broken corona wire, or could be a high voltage connection problem. More good news.. in practice, a blank page is almost always a sign of a toner cartridge problem.
If you switch cartridges, and the problem doesn't go away, you can try a half page test. just print something (not blank) and open printer in mid print. You'll get a paper jam, but with the printer open, the drum in the cartridge should be exposed. If there is an image on the drum, it's #3 above.. otherwise, it's #1. It's unlikely you need a repair.
These older business class HP LaserJet printers are great units. If you need nice text pages, it will beat any inkjet for cost per page, permanent images and rugged dependability.
We refurbish the and sell them here at Landmark. We think they are about the best built printer ever. These printer were designed to go a million pages.. and everything that wears can be replaced. We expect to see them used for years to come. "

Error Code 13 on HP LaserJet Laser Printer - Paper jam
If you have a PAPER JAM error message, you have to make sure that any obstuction (paper) is removed.. and that all the sensors are back where they belong. Look for trouble at the input trays (all of them), the back door, and under the toner cartridge.
Most business class machines now give location of the paper jam.. they all start with "13" and the have another number, if your machine reads 13.1, you know it in the front. If you make sure all paper is out, then open the toner door and close it, most errors of this type go away. If not, read the control panel.

Another page was updated today. It's still in need of an overhaul, but was the most visited internal page for the last year.
We've given away many thousands of these cleaning kits, and built a good deal of regular customers for Landmark.. mostly from a page we put up years back.

We need to find a balance.
There is a new article on the LaserPage Logo Store. My intention was to create a store with some LaserPage logo merchandise. Not to sell products, but to show how easy it is to do.
I prepared a mailing to all of our mailing lists, about the changes we're making. Left the Blog out.. guess it will have to go in the next one.
